Mahadasha: the planetary periods that pace a life
If houses and signs are the where of a birth chart, dashas are the when. The Vimshottari dasha system — the most widely used timing method in Jyotish — divides a life into planetary chapters called mahadashas. Each graha takes its turn as the ruling theme of your years, in a fixed order and for a fixed span.
The 120-year wheel
Vimshottari allots 120 years across the nine grahas in a set sequence:
- Ketu — 7 years
- Venus — 20 years
- Sun — 6 years
- Moon — 10 years
- Mars — 7 years
- Rahu — 18 years
- Jupiter — 16 years
- Saturn — 19 years
- Mercury — 17 years
Nobody starts at the beginning of the wheel. Your entry point is set by the nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth — each of the 27 nakshatras is ruled by one of the nine grahas, and that ruler's mahadasha is the one you are born into, already partly elapsed. Antardashas: chapters within chapters
Each mahadasha is subdivided into nine antardashas (sub-periods), one for each graha, in the same order, proportional to their spans. So you are always in a pair — say, Rahu mahadasha, Moon antardasha — and the reading blends the two: the mahadasha lord sets the era's theme, the antardasha lord colours the current stretch of it.
What a dasha changes
A dasha does not override the birth chart; it activates parts of it. The classical principle is that a graha's period delivers the promise of that graha as it stands in your chart — its sign, its house, its dignity, the houses it rules. A well-placed Saturn's mahadasha can be nineteen years of steady construction; the same period with Saturn poorly placed asks for more patience. The chart is the script; the dasha decides which scenes are on stage.
This is why two people in the same mahadasha live it differently, and why generic "Rahu dasha is bad" folklore misses the point — the same texts that describe difficult results for one placement describe excellent ones for another.
Finding your dasha
