Sun sign vs Moon sign: why Jyotish starts with the Moon
Ask someone their sign and they will usually give you their Sun sign — the one newspaper horoscopes use. Ask a Jyotishi the same question and they will want your Moon sign, your rashi. The difference is not a technicality; it changes what the reading is about.
What the Sun sign describes
The Sun stays in one sign for about a month, so it describes something broad: vitality, ego, the general direction of the self. Everyone born in the same month shares it. That is exactly why Sun-sign columns feel generic — they divide humanity into twelve buckets by birth month.
What the Moon sign describes
The Moon changes signs roughly every two and a quarter days, and within each sign it passes through nakshatras — 27 finer lunar mansions, each lasting about a day. Your Moon sign and nakshatra therefore say something far more specific about you than your birth month can.
Classically, the Moon governs manas — the mind, moods, and instincts. Jyotish treats it as the seat of everyday experience: how you feel, react, and settle. That is why nearly all practical Vedic techniques are counted from the Moon:
- Gochara (transits) — whether today's Saturn or Jupiter is favourable is judged by which house it occupies from your Moon sign, not your Sun sign.

- Vimshottari dasha — the planetary period system that paces your life is seeded by the nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth.
Why your Vedic sign differs from your Western one
There is a second, separate difference: Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, aligned to the actual stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, aligned to the seasons. The two have drifted about 24 degrees apart over the centuries. So even your Sun sign is usually one sign earlier in the Vedic system — a tropical Leo is often a sidereal Karka (Cancer).
Finding your Moon sign
You need your birth date, time, and place — the Moon moves fast enough that the time of day matters. Any proper Jyotish calculation will give you the rashi and the nakshatra together, since the nakshatra is the finer address within the sign.
