What is a Kundli? Your Janam Kundli, in plain words
A kundli — spelled kundali in Sanskrit transliteration, and called a janam kundli or Vedic birth chart — is a map of the sky drawn for the exact moment and place you were born. Nothing mystical happens in the drawing itself: it records where the Sun, Moon, and planets stood against the zodiac, seen from your birthplace, at your birth time. Jyotish, the Indian tradition of astrology, then reads that map the way a musician reads a score.
The three ingredients
Every Kundali is built from three things:
- Your birth date — fixes where the slow-moving planets were.
- Your birth time — fixes the lagna (ascendant), the sign rising on the eastern horizon. The lagna changes roughly every two hours, which is why Jyotish cares so much about an accurate birth time.
- Your birth place — fixes which part of the sky was rising there, since the horizon differs by location.
Change any one of these and the chart changes. Two people born on the same day in different cities have different Kundalis.
Houses: the twelve areas of life
The chart divides the sky into twelve bhavas (houses), counted from your lagna. Each house governs an area of life: the 1st is the self and body, the 2nd wealth and speech, the 4th home and mother, the 7th partnership, the 10th career and public standing, and so on. A planet placed in a house brings its nature to that area of life.
Signs: the twelve flavours
The twelve rashis (signs) — Mesha through Meena — are the backdrop the houses fall on. A sign colours how a planet behaves: Mars in its own sign of Mesha acts differently from Mars in Karka, where classical texts consider it debilitated. In Jyotish the signs are calculated against the sidereal zodiac (the actual star positions), which is why your Vedic Sun sign is usually one sign earlier than your Western one.
Planets: the nine actors
Jyotish reads nine grahas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. Each has a temperament — Jupiter expands, Saturn tests and matures, Venus harmonises — and each rules certain houses in your chart, tying areas of life together.
What a Kundali is not
A birth chart is not a verdict. Classical Jyotish itself treats the chart as tendency, not destiny — the same texts that describe difficult placements spend as many verses on remedies and free choice. A good reading tells you where the weather tends to be rough and when the sky tends to clear; walking the road is still yours to do.
